If you have space for a large, spiky, evergreen shrub in your garden then Mahonias are a superstar in the world of plants for pollinators. This striking shrub flowers in winter from January to March, making it a valuable source of nectar for any pollinator coming out of hibernation. Ours is always buzzing with bees on sunny winter's days.
It grows to 1.5 tall and 1m across in a moist but well-drained soil in sun or shade.
No pruning is needed.
