A native floating or rafting aquatic plant that spreads across the pond surface over the years to form a loose, open mat that provides shelter for tadpoles and other wildlife. Newts use the leaves to lay eggs. Tiny blue flowers are produced from May to September.

 

This plant will also grow in the damp soil at a pond margin or in a bog garden.
